St. Michael church, 1770, and belfry, late 19th c.

Church in Lypne

In a collected documents edition entitled "The nine hundredth anniversary of the orthodoxy in Volyn'" (Zhytomyr: 1892) one can read that the church in the village of Lypen' (an old name of Lypne), Luts'k district, "was built in 1770 for the parishioners' money; it's wooden and has a stone foundation, the belfry is the same. The villages of Maydan, Kholonevychi, Zatyshshya and Znamyrivka are attached to it."
After a thoroughful examination the church's age was established more exactly: the church was built in 1768 and the belfry was constructed in 1888.
According to local narrations, the newly built church stood initially on oak piles, and then a stone foundation was made. A lot of human bones were unearthed at that time so it's quite probable that the church was built at the place where a cemetery had been situated earlier.
St. Michael church's altar is oriented toward east; the church has three cupolas.

Church in Lypne. Iconostasis

In the church's interior one can see tempera paintings of the 19th century and wood engravings of the 18-19th centuries. The five-tier iconostasis (1899) is created according to classic patterns; at the same time it's very original as it combines the proportions proper to neoclassicism with the elements of the Ukrainian baroque magnificent forms. In the centre of the iconostasis there are holy gates carved of two unbroken boards; the gates are notable for a particular complexity of the composition and richness of decorative elements dominated by an ancient Christian motive of vine. The iconostasis and paintings were created by artists Poznakhovskyj and Aleksandrovych.
In the church you can see icons of St. Basyl the Great and St. John the Theologian (according to all available data, they date back to the 18th century), as well as a handheld case with a double-sided icon of St. Barbara and St. Michael.
There are also icons of Annunciation, Blessed Virgin of Pochaiv and rev. Job of Pochaiv there. In rather an unusual manner they are situated on the eastern wall of the iconostasis.

Plan [MTA, v. 2, p. 78]
